2016 Earth Hour Saturday March 19,2016


Earth Hour 2016 will be on Saturday, March 19,2016 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. during participants' local time. It will be the 10th year anniversary of the campaign's beginnings in Sydney, Australia.

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement for the planet organized by the World Wide Fund For Nature  (WWF)

The event is held worldwide annually encouraging individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. towards the end of March, as a symbol for their commitment to the planet

It was famously started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007.

Since then it has grown to engage more than 7000 cities and towns worldwide


India to join world in observing Earth Hour today

As part of efforts to spread the message of energy conservation, India will join a billion people in over six cities across the globe to observe the Earth Hour today.

It will be observed by switching off electrical appliances between 8.30 pm and 9.30 pm.

As the Earth Hour coincides with the India-Pakistan match in ongoing T20 World Cup, power distribution companies have urged people to cheer for India while observing the Earth Hour

In India, the focus of the campaign this year is on the potential of solar energy as a viable and renewable source of power.

Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan is endorsing the campaign this year.

More than 350 landmarks across the world turned off their lights at 8.30pm on Saturday to mark the 10th anniversary of Earth Hour Saturday March 19,2016, an annual event that aims to highlight the threat of climate change
