US, Russia announce Syria ceasefire from Saturday Feb 27,2016


The US and Russia on Monday Feb 22,2016 announced plans for a cessation of hostilities in war-torn Syria that would go into effect on Saturday Feb 27,2016

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed a ceasefire agreement for Syria as a "long-awaited signal of hope" and urged all sides to abide by it.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the truce announced on Monday Feb 22,2016 "contributes to creating an environment conducive for the resumption of political negotiations," 
The agreement on the ceasefire "is a long-awaited signal of hope to the Syrian people that after five years of conflict, there may be an end to their suffering in sight," said Ban in a statement.
Once the cessation of hostilities takes hold, the United Nations will work to secure "access to as many places as possible in order to deliver humanitarian aid," said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

US President Barack Obama called Russia's Vladimir Putin on Monday Feb 22,2016 to discuss the terms of a ceasefire to take effect in Syria on February 27, 2016  the White House said, cautioning that the road ahead would not be easy.

"This is a moment of opportunity and we are hopeful that all the parties will capitalize on it," White House spokesman Josh Earnest told as he revealed the call between the two leaders.
