The film, which was shot at Vagamon in Kerala, has Naseeruddin Shah
playing the the role of a marijuana farmer. It also has Aahana Kumra
(known for her debut in the TV series Yudh, which starred Amitabh Bachchan) in the lead role.
The Blueberry Hunt is writer-director-producer Kurian’s second movie; his first film, Manasarovar, won the best picture award at the International Film Festival of Mumbai, 2005.
This will perhaps be the first time ever that a new movie is being
released in cinema halls and on digital platforms on the same day.
The online version, which is priced slightly higher than
a cinema ticket, can be downloaded through a link and comes with a
three-day expiry period. The links can be downloaded only through the
user’s registered internet protocol (IP) address.
In 2013, actor Kamal Haasan had announced a direct-to-home premiere of the movie Vishwaroopam, but had to withdraw it following protests by cinema owners.
“With the spread of the Internet, a movie released today in India will
be available at the farthest corner of the world immediately after the
first day, first show. This is an attempt to curb piracy or at least
control it, as far as this movie is concerned,” said Anup Kurian,
director of the movie.
Piracy is estimated to have cost the Indian movie industry more than $1 billion in 2012. Recent numbers are not available.
A user can purchase a digital copy from the film’s Facebook page,
Twitter timeline or website using a credit or debit card. A link to a
high definition (1080p) digital copy, which is equivalent to a Blu-Ray
print, will be provided to the buyer. Each copy has a digital watermark
that helps identify the buyer and prevents unauthorised duplication.
