Government officials can no longer be investigated for corruption in
Tamil Nadu without the state's approval.
A government recent order to this effect, which has incensed activists, has been challenged in court and the case will be heard today.
In the order dated February 2, 2016 the state government has made it mandatory for the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau to forward corruption allegations to the Vigilance Commission, which will seek the government's remarks before ordering a probe.
Earlier, top bureaucrats from the level of Joint Secretary, had immunity from immediate investigation. Corruption charges against them could be probed with the approval of the state government.
But the new order is applicable to all government employees.
