Justice T S Thakur named as next Chief Justice of India


Sixty-three-year-old Justice TS Thakur, who shot into the limelight with his hard-hitting judgment in the IPL spot-fixing scam that resulted in the ouster of then powerful BCCI president N Srinivasan and two top teams - Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, will be the next Chief Justice of India. 

Justice Thakur’s passion for cricket was evident during the year-long hearing of the case. 

Captain of the SC Judges XI for the past three years, his other hobbies are golf, badminton, swimming, reading and gardening. 

Judge Thakur’s name was also much talked about recently when he decided to examine if ‘sardar jokes’ amounted to racial abuse or discrimination. 

Hailing from Jammu, he is the senior-most judge of the SC and will take charge as the 43rd CJI of India when the incumbent HL Dattu retires on December 02,2015 


Justice Thakur, who was elevated as an SC judge and assumed charge on November 17, 2009, would have a tenure of little over one year. He would retire as Chief Justice on January 4, 2017. 

The probe in the Saradha chit fund scam case is also being monitored by an SC bench headed by him. He is also hearing the multi-crore NRHM scam.

About Justice T S Thakur

Justice Thakur, who would be the 43rd CJI, was born on January 4, 1952 and enrolled as a Pleader in October 1972. He began practising in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court and dealt with all types of matters, including civil, criminal, tax and Constitutional and service cases.
He then joined the chamber of his father D.D. Thakur, an eminent advocate who became a judge of Jammu and Kashmir High Court and later a union minister.
Justice Thakur, who was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court and assumed charge on November 17, 2009, would have tenure of little over one year. He would retire as CJ on January 4, 2017.
