Google's musical doodle celebrates Hollywood actress-turned-inventor Hedy Lamarr's 101st birthday Monday Nov 09,2015

Google’s homepage today is adorned with a musical doodle with an amazing story behind it. It is Hollywood star Hedy Lamarr’s 101st birthday.

Who would have thought an actress from the 1940s could have helped develop technologies we use in the modern world!

Hedy Lamarr, an Austrian-born actress Hollywood once dubbed ‘the most beautiful woman in the world’, has an unbelievable history. Bored by the film industry, Lamarr found interest in helping the Allied war effort.

With a background in military munitions, Lemarr worked with a composer friend George Antheil and used the principles of how pianos worked to identify a way to prevent German submarines from jamming ally radio signals.

The patent for ‘frequency hopping’ that Lamarr co-authored laid the foundation for widely used modern technologies like the Bluetooth, GPS, and WiFi.

Doodler Jennifer Hom has created today’s doodle celebrating the birth anniversary of the mythical personality, highlighting Lamarr in different scenarios - movie star by day, inventor by night—which were then animated and set to a soundtrack created by composer Adam Ever-Hadani.
