2015 Kerala Civic Polls - Counting for Kerala local body elections underway, LDF takes the lead Saturday Nov 07,2015

Counting is underway today Saturday Nov 07,2015 for the local body elections in Kerala.

The counting began at 8.00 a.m, with the results coming slowly; as the Left is marginally ahead of the ruling Congress led United Democratic Front (UDF).

The polls were held for 21,871 seats in 941 village, 152 blocks and 14 district panchayats besides 86 municipalities and 6 corporations

In the block level polls, the LDF is ahead in 36, while the UDF is leading in 25.

Coming to the district panchayat the LDF is ahead in five with the UDF leading in two.

Regarding to the municipalities the LDF is leading in 31 and the UDF in 37.

In the six corporations, the LDF and UDF are ahead in three each

In the 2010 polls, the UDF won 65 % of the seats

Early trends show Left Democratic Front (LDF) taking lead in several local bodies across panchayats and municipal corporations in Kerala.

For the LDF the elections are more like a do or die situation. This election result will be important nationally as Kerala is still one place that supports the Left and they do not want to lose their ground. There have been several corruption charges against the UDF government but the LDF was not able to convert it to election victories during by-elections.

The UDF has taken the second place. It's a tough fight between the Congress-led UDF and the Left Front.

The BJP has been able to make only marginal gains in the state

The CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) has made a dramatic return to dominance at the grassroots in Kerala in a keenly contested local bodies’ elections, which have also pushed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to the front as a claimant to the State’s bi-polar political space.

In a clear reversal of political fortunes as compared to the 2010 elections, the Opposition alliance has been able to gain control of close to
551 of the 941 grama panchayats
90 of the 152 block panchayats
43 of the 87 municipalities
besides an upper hand in 4 out of the 6 Corporations in the State.

BJP has put in an eye-catching performance by winning 14 grama panchayats by the last count, coming second in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, emerging the single largest party in the Palakkad municipal council and, generally, increasing its tally of grama panchayat wards from 384 in 2010 to 930 plus this time.
