The Queen has officially welcomed Chinese president Xi Jinping to London to mark the start of his state visit to the UK.
After being greeted at the Horse Guards Parade,Chinese president Xi Jinping and his wife
joined the Queen and Prince Philip for the procession to the palace
The royal party were escorted by more than a thousand soldiers as they travelled down the Mall towards Buckingham Palace
Chinese president Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan were met at the Horse Guards Parade by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, who introduced the visitors to a host of dignitaries including David Cameron and Home Secretary Theresa May.
The
party then travelled in a ceremonial carriage up the Mall, which was
lined by pro-Beijing supporters as well as rival groups from Amnesty
International, before arriving at Buckingham Palace. A state banquet
will be held in Mr Xi's honour at the Palace this evening.
Chinese
President Xi Jinping will address both houses of the British
Parliament on Tuesday afternoon as he and his wife begin a four-day
visit that has aroused concern among human rights activists.The
visit is designed to strengthen economic ties between Britain and China
-- including Chinese investment in the UK and commercial ties between
the two countries
The Duke of Edinburgh accompanies Mr Xi as he inspects a Guard of Honour

Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan receive a ceremonial welcome at Horse
Guards Parade before travelling in a carriage procession along The Mall
to Buckingham Palace.
Later, Mr Xi will address members at Parliament. He is also due to meet Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
The Queen will then host a glittering white-tie state banquet at Buckingham Palace.
Wednesday
Mr Xi will visit Imperial College London with the Duke of York and George Osborne.
He
will meet the PM at Downing Street before before visiting the UK-China
Business Summit and telecommunications company Huawei Technologies.
Thursday
Mr
Xi, joined by the Duke of York, will visit Inmarsat, a global satellite
communication services company, before attending a Confucius Institute
conference.
The party are expected to have fish and chips for lunch, at Mr Xi's request.
In the evening, Mr Xi and his wife will join Mr and Mrs Cameron at Chequers for dinner before flying to Manchester.
Friday
Mr
Xi will visit the National Graphene Institute at the University of
Manchester with Mr Osborne and then the impressive Manchester City
Football facilities with Mr Cameron.
The president and Mr Cameron will attend an event at Manchester Airport before Mr Xi and Ms Peng head home.
