 “Today I’m announcing a 21st century government and a ministry for the future,” Malcolm Turnbull told reporters at Parliament in Canberra, describing the changes as a renewal. “We are not seeking to proof ourselves against the future. We are seeking to embrace it.”

Malcolm Turnbull’s deputy, Julie Bishop, remains as Foreign Minister in an enlarged cabinet that includes five women—three more than Tony Abbott’s—as the new Prime Minister moves to present a more inclusive government

Upper house Senator Marise Payn(51) takes over as Australia’s first female Defense Minister ahead of the release of a major long-term strategy blueprint in November that will outline a 20-year, A$270 billion (US$194 billion) plan to boost the military, which includes A$89 billion for new frigates and offshore combat vessels to be built in Australia.

Two minsters, Trade minister Andrew Robb and Assistant Minister for Health Ken Wyatt, were absent from the ceremony, with both overseas.

Nine of the new ministers and assistant ministers, including five in Cabinet and the first ever female Defence Minister Senator Marisse Payne, are women.

The fresh female look was symbolised by the new Assistant Treasurer Kelly O’Dwyer who strolled up to the Government House swearing in pushing a pram containing her new born baby.
