NDA Govt Unveils List of 98 Smart Cities Thursday August 27,2015






 The NDA Government Thursday August 27,2015 announced the names of 98 towns and cities chosen for its Smart Cities project after a nationwide "competition" between states

Each state will get at least one Smart City, which, in PM Modi's words, translates to "very high quality of life comparable with any developed European city".

Out of 98 cities, 24 are capital cities, another 24 are business and industrial centres, 18 are of cultural and tourism importance, 5 are port cities, and 3 being education and health care hubs.

Uttar Pradesh, the most populous and politically vital state, will get the most number of Smart Cities - 13.Tamil Nadu will have 12 and Maharashtra will get 10 such cities. Madhya Pradesh will have seven Smart Cities and Gujarat and Karnataka will have 6 each

The total population of these proposed 98 Smart Cities is about 12 crore accounting for 35 per cent of country's total urban population as per the 2011 census, Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said while releasing the list.

As per the profile of the selected cities, 35 cities and towns have a population between one and five lakh. There are 21 cities with population ranging between five and 10 lakh.

25 cities have population of above 10 lakh and below 25 lakh. A set of 5 cities are in the population range of 25 to 50 lakhs.

Four cities - Chennai, Greater Hyderabad, Greater Mumbai and Ahmedabad have population of about above 50 lakh each.
NDA Government has announced Rs 48,000 crore for development of 100 Smart cities out of which 98 names were declared and rest two will be nominated in due course.

States/UTs and Urban Local Bodies have to make an equal matching contribution. This in effect means that central and state governments and ULBs will invest Rs 96,000 crore over the next five years for making 100 chosen cities smart

Smart City Plans will be implemented by a Special Purpose Vehicle to be set up for each identified city to enable a focused effort for effective implementation.
States/UTs and Urban Local Bodies will have 50 : 50 equity in SPV

The cities which have have population of one lakh and below but figure in the list are Silvassa, Diu, Kavaratti, Pasighat in Arunachal and Namchi in Sikkim.

The Centre has announced that Tamil Nadu, one of the most urbanised States in the country, will get 12 smart cities. That is all the 12 corporations in the State will get the Smart City tag

Nine capital cities that could not be nominated for Smart City development are Patna, Itanagar, Shimla, Banglaore, Daman, Thiruvanathapuram, Puducherry, Gangtok and Kohima
