Astronauts to eat vegetables grown on the ISS for the first time today in crucial step towards Mars mission Monday Aug 10,2015

Astronauts are set to make history later on Monday Aug 10,2015  when they tuck into fresh food grown on board the International Space Station(ISS)

A crop of lettuce planted in July 2015 will be harvested from Nasa's plant experiment system, dubbed Veg-01, and enjoyed by the current ISS crew for the first time.

Providing astronauts with fresh food is considered crucial for long-distance space travel, and today's landmark is a critical step towards Nasa's manned mission to Mars

The lettuce being eaten later today is the second harvest, and was activated on 8 July by astronaut Scott Kelly, who is part way through his one-year stay on the ISS.
The plants have been growing for 33 days, and the seeds had been on the station for 15 months before being activated.
It is not known what time the astronauts will enjoy their home-grown meal today.
