Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a three-day visit to China Thursday May 14 - 16, 2015

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in China early on Thursday morning May 14,2015 on a three-day visit. His first stop is the ancient city of Xian,( the capital of Shaanxi province) also the hometown of President Xi Jinping.

On Twitter, the PM says he is "very glad to see enthusiasm among the people of China. People-to-people ties are always special".

PM Modi's arrival in Xian is significant and a departure from protocol by the Chinese government. It is being seen as a sign of the importance China is attaching to this visit and a reciprocal gesture after President Xi was hosted by the Indian Prime Minister in his home state of Gujarat last year.

Narendra Modi  will also visit the famous Wild Goose Pagoda, the spiritual structure built to highlight famous Chinese Buddhist monk Xuan Zang's journey to India in 645 AD through the ancient Silk Road.

Narendra Modi's formal talks with the Chinese leadership will take place on Friday in Beijing. India and China are expected to sign 20 business deals worth about $10 billion during PM Modi's visit.

Trade is a major focus of this visit and India and China are expected to sign 20 business deals worth about $10 billion. PM Modi will also meet Indian and Chinese CEOs and address Industry in Shanghai on Saturday May 16,2015
The trade imbalance will figure high on the agenda. The trade deficit between India and China increased about 34 per cent to $48.43 billion in 2014-15 from $36.21 billion in the previous fiscal in China's favour.

India is expected to raise its concern over China's plans for infrastructure projects in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.

Priime Minister Narendra Modi,Chinese President Xi Jinping Meet For 90 Minutes

 

Increasing convergence, political issues and boundary issues were among the topics that Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Xian on Thursday May 14,2015

During their 90-minute meeting, the two leaders discussed ways to strengthen trust between two countries. Connectivity issues along with ways to build cooperation to fight against terrorism were also taken up during the meeting. Issue of Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) was also brought up along with an economic front, trade deficit and investment climate. 

While briefing about the meeting, Indian Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar said  -

"Discussions were wide ranging and detailed, atmosphere was very comfortable. There was a discussion on strengthening trust and increasing convergence, trade deficit was also discussed. Regional and global issues were discussed Increasing convergence''
