Sri Lankan veterans Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene bid adieu to ODI Cricket Wedneday March 18,2015


Sri Lankan veterans Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, who bowed out of ODIs on Wednesday after their team's World Cup quarterfinal loss to South Africa.  Both Jayawardene and Sangakkara had announced that the World Cup would be their final ODI assignment and much to the dismay of the Lankan fans, it ended on a disappointing note for the much celebrated duo with Sri Lanka losing by nine wickets to the Proteas   Kumar Sangakkara, who came into this game with record four consecutive ODI hundreds, scored a valiant 45 but saw an abject surrender from all the other Lankan batsmen as the innings folded for 133 in 37.2 overs. 

The stylish left-hander stitched a 65-run third wicket stand with Lahiru Thirimanne to pose a fightback after the openers departed but South African spinners Imran Tahir and Jean-Paul Duminy were too hot to handle after sharing seven wickets between them.

The 37-year-old Sangakkara, who has scored 14,234 runs in 404 ODIs, was the ninth wicket to fall in the Sri Lankan innings after the batsman stood witness to no-show by the formidable Lankan batting order.
 
Kumar Sangakkara though ended on a high after scoring 541 runs in 7 matches of this edition and is still the highest run-scorer of the tournament so far.He became the sixth player to score 500 runs in the World Cup Kumar Chokshanada Sangakkara(DOB Oct 27,1977)As of March 2015, he is the second-highest run-scorer in ODI'sand the fifth-highest run scorer in Test matchesSangakkara captained the national team from 2009 to 2011, stepping down after the 20111 WC Final With 11 double centuries, he is second in the list of Test double century-makers, behind only Donald Bradman (12)He is also the first cricketer ever to score 150+ scores in four consecutive Test matches  As the wicket keeper, he has contributed to the highest number of dismissals in ODIs—473       


Sangakkara is the fastest batsman to reach 8,000, 9,000, 11,000 and 12,000 runs in Test cricket. He is also joint fastest to 10,000.He has won the ICC Cricketer of the Year in 2012, Test Cricketer of the Year in 2012, and ODI Cricketer of the Year multiple times in 2011 and 2013Along with teammate Mahela Jayawardene, he recorded the most partnership runs for the 3rd wicket in Tests, scoring 5890 runs surpassing the 5826 runs of Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar  Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene  hold the record for the highest partnership for any wicket in Test matches, scoring 624 runs for the 3rd wicket against South Africa in 2006      Kumar Sangakkara Career statistics
