In the 9 previous editions of the WC, India and West Indies have faced off 7 times, with India enjoying a 4-3 score line

World Cup 1979
India played their first World Cup match against the West Indies in 1979 at Edgbaston. West Indies won the toss and put India in to bat. Michael Holding (4 for 33) and Andy Roberts (2 for 33) shared six wickets between them as Clive Lloyd-led West Indies skittled India for 190 in 53.1 overs. Gundappa Viswanath was the top scorer for the team with his patient 134-ball 75.

World Cup 1983
The Kapil Dev-led India began their World Cup campaign against West Indies at the Old Trafford in Manchester. Clive Lloyd, just like the previous encounter against India, opted to field. Yashpal Sharma (89) played a gem of a knock and stitched a 49-run stand with Sandeep Patil (36) and 73 with Roger Binny (27) to help India post a challenging 262/8
Ravi Shastri (3 for 26) and Roger Binny (3 for 48) dismantled West Indies' innings to give India a 34-run win.
Scorecard - India 262/8 (60/60 overs); West Indies 228 (54.1/60 overs)

The two teams met again in the 14th Match of the tournament. West Indies were in a mood of revenge following defeat in the earlier match. Clive Lloyd opted to bat this time. Vivan Richards held the Windies' fortress after they lost Greenidge (9) early and went on to score a brilliant 119. West Indies posted 282/9 in 60 overs. The target was huge but still India showed good batting display. Mohinder Amarnath scored 80 off 139 bit unfortunately Dilip Vengsarkar retired hurt on 32. India lost the match by 66 runs.
Scorecard: West Indies 282/9 (60/60 overs); India 216 (53.1/60 overs)

West Indies, chasing their back-to-back third title, were at their best. On the other hand, India had turned into a dangerous side after their series of wins. No one expected a Kapil Dev-led side, who were not favourites, to play the final, but they were there to stop the Caribbean juggernaut.
Clive Lloyd again won the toss and this time put India in to bat. No Indian batsmen, apart from Kris Srikkanth (38) and Mohinder Amarnath (26), could not stay for long at the crease. They failed miserably as the team was bowled out for just 183 in 54.4 overs. Andy Roberts (3 for 32), Malcolm Marshall (2 for 24), Michael Holding (2 for 26) and Larry Gomes (2 for 49) were the bowlers who didn't let the pressure ease off.
What Kapil Dev injected in his bowlers' mind, no one knows. Madan Lal (3 for 31) and Mohinder Amarnath (3 for 12) starred with the ball as India wrapped up Windies innings for just 140 runs, giving India a stunning 43-run victory at the Lord's and their first World Cup
Scorecard - India 183 (54.4/60 overs); West Indies 140 (52/60 overs)

World Cup 1992
India faced West Indies in a World Cup match for the first time in 10 years. Mohammad Azharuddin opted to bat against Richie Richardson-led West Indies at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. India had a solid start, Ajay Jadeja and Srikkanth stitched a 56-run stand for the opening wicket after Srikkanth and Azharuddin put on a 46-run stand for the second wicket.
From 166/4, India collapsed to 197 all out in 49.4 overs thanks to the deadly bowling of Anderson Cummins (4 for 33) and Curtly Ambrose (2 for 24).
Due to a rain interruption, West Indies were given a revised target of 195 in 46 overs. Keith Athurton (58 not out) and Brian Lara's 41 off 37 took West Indies to a comfortable 5-wicket win.
Scorecard - India 197 (49.4/50 overs); West Indies 195/5 (40.2/46 overs, target: 195)

World Cup 1996
Both the team captains were same but the venue was different. At the Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior, Richie Richardson-led West Indies opted to bat. India, riding on Anil Kumble (3 for 35) and Manoj Prabhakar's (3 for 39) bowling heroics, bowled out West Indies for 173. Richardson top scored with 47.
In reply, India didn't get a good start losing Navjot Sidhu (1) and Ajay Jadeja (1) early at the score of 15. But Sachin Tendulkar smashed a 91-ball 70 to give India a five-wicket win.
Scorecard - West Indies 173 (50/50 overs); India 174/5 (39.4/50 overs)

At MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and opted to bat against the Darren Sammy-led West Indies. India suffered the first setback when they lost Sachin Tendulkar for just 2. But a magnificent century by Yuvraj Singh (113) and Virat Kohli (59) helped India post a challenging 268 on board. Windies pacer Ravi Rampaul claimed a five-wicket haul.
West Indies gave a solid reply to India. Devon Smith (81) and Ramnaresh Sarwan (39) put on a solid partnership but Zaheer Khan was in a different mood as he claimed three West Indies wickets while Yuvraj and R Ashwin shared four between them to power India to a resounding 80-run win.
