It’s given
us many of TV’s most memorable scenes, including the jaw-dropping row
when Den Watts served his wife with divorce papers on Christmas Day,
1986, which ended with booze-sodden, battered Angie swallowing fistfuls
of tablets and washing them down with vodka.
More
than 30 million viewers watched that episode, and many complained it
had ruined their Christmas. Perhaps they were right: it started a
tradition for massive storylines over the holiday season, leading to
shockers such as the Emmerdale plane crash in 1993 and Matthew Crawley’s
fatal car smash in Downton Abbey in 2012.
