After two days of backslapping and bonhomie, interspersed with some ground-breaking hard decisions to jump start ties between the two nations, US President Barack Obama on Tuesday Jan 27,2015 touched a raw nerve as he reminded Indians that their country can succeed so long as it is not splintered along religious lines.
Hours before boarding a flight to Saudi Arabia, the US president warned India not to stray from its constitutional commitment to allow people to freely “profess, practice and propagate” religion.
“India will succeed so long as it is not splintered along the lines of religious faith, as long as it is not splintered along any lines, and it is unified as one nation,” he said, addressing around 1,500 carefully-chosen youngsters from various walks of life at a Townhall type of meeting in New Delhi’s Siri Fort auditorium, drawing loud cheers from them by speaking a few words in Hindi like “Bahut dhanyawad’ and ending with an emphatic ‘Jai Hind’.
