Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project(SSCP)

The Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project (SSCP) project, which envisages dredging a ship channel across the Palk Straits, providing a shorter navigational route for ships from the east and west coasts of the country instead of circumventing Sri Lanka, has hit a wall after protests over the proposed demolition of the Ram Sethu.

The Centre is going ahead with the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project (SSCP), and has surveyed a few alignments to ensure the safety of the Ram Sethu, the ancient underwater bridge, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday Dec 30,2014

Note
After winning the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and coming to power, the BJP-led Union government made it clear that that the Ram Sethu structure would not be demolished.

Incidentally, the Tamil Nadu government had opposed the project on the ground that it would affect the livelihood of fishermen.
