2014 Jharkhand Assembly Election Results Tuesday Dec 23,2014

BJP is all set to form government in Jharkhand

Jharkhand has seen 9 chief ministers in the past 14 years after being carved out of Bihar in 2000
None of the nine governments that had come to power in the State could complete its term. President’s rule was imposed thrice. The election was a contest between the BJP and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

Jharkhand has a 28 % tribal population, and traditionally, it has been helping the JMM win more seats.  Altogether, 18 Assembly seats fall in Santhal Pragana from where the most number of JMM candidates had been winning the election

BJP will lead its first government in the state after winning 37 out of 81 Assembly seats

The National Democratic Alliance(NDA) under BJP fielded 72 candidates. AJSU contested 8 seats while LJP contested 1 seat.

The BJP has won 37 seats; its ally, the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU), has won in 5 seats

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha(JMM)which has been ruling the state under outgoing chief minister Hemant Soren, has managed to win in just 19 seats

Outgoing Chief Minister Hemant Soren won in one of the two seats where he contested. While CM Soren won the Barhait seat, he lost the Dumka seat.
Soren defeated BJP candidate Hemalal Murmu by more than 23,000 votes in Barhait. But he lost by around 6,000 votes in Dumka to BJP candidate Louis Marandi.

The Congress party contested 60 seats, and its ally, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), fielded 19 candidates.Despite contesting 60 seats, the Congress party could not stand up to the ‘Modi wave’. It somehow managed to win in 6 seats.

The RJD under Lalu Prasad failed to win any seats in the Assembly elections

Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) won 8 seats

Former CM Madhu Koda - an accused in the coal scam - lost from the Manjhgaon Assembly seat. He was defeated by JMM candidate Nial Purty by over 20,000 votes.
Another former chief minister, Babulal Marandi, won from the Dhanwar seat but lost in Giridih. Arjun Munda - another former chief minister - lost his home turf Kharsawan (ST) to Dasrath Gagrai of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)

Jai Bharat Samanta Party candidate Geeta Koda - the wife of former CM Koda - retained the Jagannathpur seat after defeating her nearest BJP rival by 24,611 votes.
Sita Soren of the JMM won the Jama seat after besting her nearest BJP rival Suresh Murmu by 2,306 votes

The results in Jharkhand — as also in Jammu and Kashmir — signal that the fight in the future elections will be between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and regional parties.
A close look at the poll percentages also reveals that in Jharkhand if the Congress had not broken up with the JMM, the combine would have secured (10.3% plus 20.5%), virtually equalling the BJP’s 31.4 %. Indeed, the Congress’s Subodh Kant Sahay on Tuesday expressed regret that the alliance had broken.

Who will be the next CM of Jharkhand?

With the BJP securing clear majority in Jharkhand the question arises is who will be the next Chief Minister of the tribal State? The Parliamentary board of the party is scheduled to meet on Wednesday to discuss the name

Earlier, the BJP leaders have been saying that Jharkhand this time may have a non-tribal Chief Minister and there could be a Haryana-like surprise in Jharkhand too

Amid several names popping up one of them is Arjun Munda, a former Chief Minister who has lost the poll from Kharsawan assembly constituency. The other names doing the round are Raghuvar Das, Sudarshan Bhagat, Saryu Rai, Sunil Singh and Ganesh Mishra.  Among the non-tribal face the BJP leader Saryu Rai who won the poll from Jamshedpur (east) and Sunil Singh, party MP from Chatra too could come up as surprise candidates for the chief minister’s post.
