Prime Minister Narendra Modi launches 'Adarsh Gram Yojana' Saturday Oct 11,2014

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday Oct 11,2014 launched Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) saying that the scheme was driven by demand and not by supply. Launching the scheme on the occasion of birth anniversary of Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan, Modi said, "The country's development model has been supply driven. We want to change it by making it demand driven."

Talking about the scheme, Modi said, "This is not a scheme about money. It is people driven and guided by people's participation, guided by the MPs. With MPs involved in this Yojana we can target about 1500 villages."

The scheme aimed to keep the soul of rural India alive while providing people with quality access to basic amenities and opportunities to enable them to shape their own destiny.

The SAGY also aimed at instilling certain values, such as people's participation, Antyodaya, gender equality, dignity of women, social justice, spirit of community service, cleanliness, eco-friendliness, maintaining ecological balance, peace and harmony, mutual cooperation, self-reliance, local self government, transparency and accountability in public life, etc in the villages and their people so that they get transformed into models for others.

In districts where this unit size was not available, gram panchayats approximating the desirable population size may be chosen. If each MP adopts three villages, the scheme will be able to develop 2,379 gram panchayats over the next five years.
