Devendra Fadnavis elected first BJP chief minister in Maharashtra

The BJP cleared the decks for Devendra Fadnavis’s ascension to the post of chief minister in Maharashtra after it elected him the leader of the BJP Legislature Party on Tuesday Oct 28,2014

The factors weighing in his favour include a clean image, and a good relationship with both the RSS and BJP leadership.

The four-time legislator from Nagpur South West was tipped for the post right from October 19, when the BJP emerged as the single largest party in Maharashtra.

Hailing from a family with deep roots in the Sangh, Fadnavis began his political career with the BJP’s student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in 1989. At 22, he became a corporator in the Nagpur civic body in 1992. Five years later, he went on to become the youngest mayor of Nagpur

Devendra Fadnavis’s name was proposed by senior party leader Eknath Khadse at the BJP’s legislature party meeting in Mumbai. The proposal was endorsed by party leaders Sudhir Mungantiwar, Vinod Tawde and Pankaja Munde Palwe.

Union minister and the party’s central observer Rajnath Singh then announced Fadnavis as the BJP leader in the Maharashtra Assembly
