This will be the second election since the centre-right Alliance for Sweden coalition (comprising the Moderate Party,Liberal People's Party,Centre Party and Christian Democrats) formed government in 2006
It will also be the first nationwide electoral test for the nationalist Sweden Democrats after winning seats in parliament for the first time in the previous election.

Liberal People's Party (FP), is Sweden's fourth largest political party with 24 of the 349 seats in Swedish Riksdag
Centre Party (C), is Sweden's fifth largest political party with 23 of the 349 seats in Swedish Riksdag
Sweden Democrats (SD), is Sweden's sixth largest political party with 20 of the 349 seats in Swedish Riksdag
Left Party (V), is Sweden's seventh largest political party with 19 of the 349 seats in Swedish Riksdag
Christian Democrats (KD), is Sweden's eighth largest political party with 19 of the 349 seats in Swedish Riksdag
Saturday's polls gave the Social Democrats, Greens and Left parties a lead of 5.3 and 5.7 percentage points over the ruling centre-right government, a much narrower gap than the opposition had enjoyed until recently and short of a majority in the 349-seat parliament.
A poll-of-polls by Novus for Swedish radio showed the gap between the centre-left and centre-right at 5.9 percentage points.
