2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games Begins Wednesday July 23,2014



The 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games begins with the opening ceremony at Celtic Park featuring 3,000 cast members alongside 4,500 athletes from the 71 participating nations



The Queen will open the Games, reading a message contained in the baton which formed the heart of a 10-month relay across the Commonwealth.

The opening ceremony will feature a parade around Celtic Park by thousands of athletes taking part in the Games.
The journey from their accommodation, at the Athlete's Village in Dalmarnock, close to Celtic Park, is expected to take about one hour.
India, as previous host, will lead the parade, which will end with the current host, Team Scotland

The opening ceremony will be shown on a huge LED screen running the entire length of the south stand at Celtic Park.The giant screen, which stands across the whole of the South Stand, is almost 100 meters long, 11 meters high and weighs 38 tonnes.


Squash player Nick Matthew will be the flag bearer for Team England

Judo player Euan Burton will be the Team Scotland flag bearer at the opening ceremony

Rhythmic gymnast Francesca Jones will be the flag bearer for Team Wales
 Vijay Kumar(won the silver medal in the individual 25 metre rapid fire pistol event at the 2012 Summer Olympics) has been named India's flag-bearer for the opening ceremony.

Sachin Tendulkar will make his presence felt during the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in his capacity as the Global Goodwill Ambassador of the UNICEF

Google marks start of 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games




The Glasgow 2014 accreditation pass, complete with ID mugshot and a plethora of symbols and letters, is notably large.Even the Queen has a VIP pass to the Games, which she was given during a visit to the uniform and accreditation centre a Kelvin Hall in Glasgow.


About 70,000 people, including the volunteer Clydesiders, need to be accredited for the Games.
Passes include information about who you are and what venues and transport services you can access.


Glasgow 2014 staff, and volunteer Clydesiders are clearly identifiable in their red and grey uniform.

There's also a blue and grey uniform for technical staff.
For baton bearers, there's blue trousers and a white t-shirt with flashes of blue and yellow, featuring the Queen's Baton Relay logo.

Baton Relay
The hand-written message was inserted by Queen, during a ceremony at Buckingham palace,on Oct 09,2013

It was then sealed for its journey of more than 190,000 km through Commonwealth territories in Asia, Oceania, Africa, North and South America and the Caribbean.
Along the way it has been carried by thousands of baton bearers, some 4,000 in Scotland alone, amid a carnival atmosphere in cities, towns and villages around the globe.

BARROWMAN'S GAY KISS

 

John Barrowman, the Scottish-American actor, singer, dancer and presenter, kissed one of the performers during the ceremony. 


In what was seen as a clear message to the 42 countries of the Commonwealth where it is still a crime to be gay, Glasgow-born Barrowman reached out to kiss the man before holding his hand during a sequence to celebrate Gretna Green.
Craig Drummond tweeted: ‘It makes me strangely proud to be Scottish that John Barrowman can kiss a man on live tv.’
Barrowman is openly gay and married.




 New Venues
Two of the showpiece venues to open in the past year include the £125m Hydro arena at the SECC complex, and the £113m National Indoor Sports Arena and

Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, opposite Celtic Park.

The Indian contingent finished second in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. The 101 medals overall in that edition was a record that the country would hope to replicate and perhaps even better

India finished second behind Australia with a record 101 medal haul in the 2010 CWG held in New Delhi

The target for India in Glasgow 2014  would be a third-place finish with the top spot expected to go either to Australia or England

India has sent 215 athletes in 14 sports, its largest ever after 2010 Delhi CWG

India will be hit hard by the scrapping of archery and tennis from Glasgow Games and the reduction in the number of medal events in shooting and wrestling.

India had won a combined 12 medals from archery and tennis in 2010 while bagging 14 medals from the 18 events dropped this time from shooting. Greco-Roman category in wrestling, from which India won eight medals in 2010, has also been done away with in Glasgow.

 

Indians to Watch out for

Saina Nehwal may have made the hard decision to opt out of CWG 2014 but for Indian badminton P. Kashyap and P.V. Sindhu are expected to be among medals in men's and women's singles respectively while the women's doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa would be raring to defend the gold they won in 2010. 


 Badminton

The badminton competitions at the Glasgow Games begin with mixed team event at the Emirates Arena and India have been placed in Pool B along with Ghana, Kenya and Uganda. It should not be a problem for India to top the group and make it to the knockout round.
The group winner of the six pools and the two best runners-up teams will make it to the quarterfinals.




 Weightlifting

India's first medal in the Games is expected to come on Thursday from weightlifting when the competitions begin with the women's 48kg and men's 56kg weight categories, respectively.
This time, India, with six lifters from 2010 Games, are likely to maintain that level of performance. Khumukcham Sanjita and Saikhom Mirabai Chanu are competing on Thursday in women's 48kg and India have a chance to win two medals from this category.
This has been a strong category for India since the days of Kunjarani Devi. India had won a silver and bronze in this category in 2010.
The Indian duo will have a strong competitor in Chika Amalaha of Nigeria, who had won silver in 53kg in Commonwealth Championships, but is competing in 48kg class in Glasgow

Shooting contingent is under Abhinav Bindra after Gagan Narang failed to qualify for the 10m air rifle event

Rahi Sarnobat and Anisa Sayyed won the gold in the pairs 25m pistol event for women in the 2010 CWG

Two Indian Athletes Pull Out of Glasgow Event


Sachin Roby, who was to take part in men's 4x400m relay, has been suffering from Jaundice for the last few days and would no longer be able to participate in the Commonwealth Games, while para-athlete Sachin Choudhary has returned home due to deteriorating condition of his ailing father.
