2014 England Vs India Investec 5-Match Test Series First Test At Trent Bridge July 09-13,2014

England Vs India First Test At Trent Bridge,Nottingham July 09-13,2014

Alastair Cook and MS Dhoni with the series trophy on the eve of the Trent Bridge Test
The Test series starting in Nottingham on July 9 will be the first five-Test series between England and India in England after a gap of 55 years. The last five-Test series that India played in England was in 1959

The ensuing series will be after 12 Test series between England and India in England.England and India have played 107 Tests out of which 47 ended in draws.

This is the 108th Test match between India and England – 53rd in England and sixth at Trent Bridge.

England captain Alastair Cook has an aggregate of 1437 runs against India prior to the start of this series. He needs 63 runs for his 1500. If he gets then, he would become the third England batsman to total 1500-plus runs against India. Others are - Graham Gooch (1725) and Kevin Pietersen (1581).

James Anderson has an aggregate of 57 wickets against India prior to the start of this series. Three more wickets would give him 60 wickets and he would become the third England bowler to capture 60-plus wickets against India. Others are Bob Willis (62) and Derek Underwood (62).

The five-Test series will be played without the aid of the Decision Review System(DRS) with India again refusing to agree to its use.

India's star batsmen Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman have all retired, leaving six of their top seven playing their first Test on English soil.

New drainage systems and the heavy roller are being blamed for lifeless English pitches but far more pertinent is the ECB’s prohibitive bidding system for Tests that sees counties paying huge fees to stage matches. Tests have to last five days for any county to make a profit from big matches.

The result on Wednesday was that India felt very much at home on the first day of a pivotal series for Alastair Cook.

Certainly there was no home advantage in Nottingham for England on a low, slow batting paradise of a pitch that was prepared more to ensure that the first Investec Test will last into the weekend rather than produce compelling cricket.

Murali Vijay averages 18 outside of India but here he was able to record his first Test century away from his home country

Murali Vijay spent 13 balls on 99 before, having demonstrated composure worthy of team mentor and retired India batting great Rahul Dravid, a scampered single off Anderson saw the 30-year-old to his fourth hundred in 23 Tests and first outside India(previous highest was 97 against South Africa at Durban in December 2013)

Vijay’s innings is the fifth highest by any Indian on the opening day of a Test in England. The details:

On a day of fluctuating fortunes, England had hurtled back into contention with four wickets for two runs after lunch to reduce India to 346-9 following Murali Vijay's 146.

India went from 344 for 5 to 346 for 9, a collapse of four wickets for two runs. England took four for one against Sri Lanka at Headingley in June. There have been 32 instances of teams losing nos. 6 to 9 for a total of zero, one or two runs in Tests.

But an extraordinary stand of 111 - India's highest for the 10th wicket against England - between number nine Bhuvneshwar Kumar and number 11 Mohammed Shami, who both scored their maiden Test fifties, sapped England's spirit and put India firmly back in charge

Murali Vijay converts his overnight 122 into a fine 146
Murali Vijay's 146 was the seventh instance of an Indian batsman scoring a century during his first match in England. The others are Sourav Ganguly, Vijay Manjrekar, Sandeep Patil, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Abbas Ali Baig and Ajit Agarkar

M S Dhoni is run out for 82 by James Anderson's direct hit
M S Dhoni scored 82 runs before being run out, only the fourth time that he was dismissed in that fashion, and the first time outside India. Dhoni now has five half-centuries in England, the most for him in any country outside India. His nine fifties against England are also more than he has against any other Test nation. Dhoni has 15 fifties in away Tests, to go along with 15 fifties at home.

Mohammad Shami, India’s No. 11, walked in to bat at Trent Bridge in the fifth over after Lunch on Day 2. In those five overs, India had lost four wickets for four runs

India’s last-wicket pair -Bhuveshwar Kumar & Mohammed Shami put on 111 Runs

Bhuvneshwar and Shami faced 229 balls, the most by a final-wicket pair in England and the only instance when a 10th wicket pair had played more than 200 balls at Trent Bridge.
The 111-run partnership between Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami is India’s best tenth wicket partnership against England and second best against any country. The best still remains 133 between Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan against Bangladesh at Dhaka in 2004-05.
India’s previous highest tenth wicket partnership against England was 73 between Anil Kumble and Sreesanth at Oval in 2007.

England's 10th-wicket turmoil

2013: Australia debutant Ashton Agar makes 98 at number 11 in a stand of 163 with Phil Hughes in the Ashes at Trent Bridge
2012: Last man Tino Best hits 95 and adds 143 with Denesh Ramdin for West Indies at Edgbaston

Alastair Cook failed again with the bat as England replied to India’s imposing 457 in the first Investec Test at Trent Bridge.

Alastair Cook was unfortunate to be bowled behind his legs by Mohammed Shami for just five runs as England closed the second day on 43 for 1.
It is now 25 innings since Alastair Cook has scored a Test hundred — a dismal sequence in which he has averaged just 24. England, meanwhile, have won none of their last eight Tests.
Alastair Cook, whose team have lost six of their last seven Tests, has now scored only 606 runs in his last 13 Tests at an average of 24.24

India have made a 400-plus score in the first innings of a Test match against England on 29 previous occasions. Nineteen of them were drawn and nine were won by India. However, England did win on one occasion

Day Three Friday July 11,2014

Trailing by 414 runs, England will look for a solid start from two promising batsmen Sam Robson (batting 20) and Gary Ballance (15 not out). Robson is a 25-year-old Sydney-born who has come through the ranks at Middlesex. He has a century already in the couple of Tests he has played. Zimbabwe-born Ballance, 24, shares a nickname - Gazza -- that former England football star Paul Gascoigne was known by. He too has a century in the three Tests he has played so far

Nine batsmen with at least one Test century were packed into England’s Trent Bridge team but they could not prevent a quite pathetic collapse on Friday July 11,2014 that exposed the depths to which a side bereft of all confidence have plummeted

Joe Root's unbeaten 78 saved England from embarrassment after the hosts blew a solid second-wicket stand between Gary Ballance (71) and Sam Robson (59), suffered a batting collapse (from 154/3 to 202/7)

Gary Ballance scored his 2nd Test Fifty
Gary Ballance and Sam Robson have a combined experience of seven Tests but they have done a solid job

Five more wickets crashed in an afternoon session where England lost six in all while scoring 74 runs after compiling 88 without loss during the morning. It was awful stuff that seemed to stun the usually supportive Trent Bridge crowd.

England did well to bounce back and first avoid the follow-on before erasing the deficit, thanks to Joe Root (78 not out) and Stuart Broad (47)

Joe Root featured in two crucial stands with Stuart Broad (47) and an unbroken 54 Runs with James Anderson (23 batting)

At close of play on Day Three,England were 352/9 in 106 Overs with

Joe Root             78* - fifth half-century in 18 Tests
James Anderson 23*
at the crease and England still needs 105 Runs to wipe out the 1st Innings Indian Score
Ishant Sharma took 3/109 and Bhuvneshwar Kumar took 4/61
Ishant Sharma, the only member of India's attack to have previously played a Test in England, took 3/29 in 7 overs to turn 131/1 into 172/4
Bhuvneshwar Kumar rocked England with a burst of 4/16 in 26 balls.

India draw the first Test at Trent Bridge and extend England's winless run to nine matches

Test Match debutant Stuart Binny's composed 78 steered the tourists away from danger, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar (63 not out) and Ravindra Jadeja (31) also making key contributions as India reached 391-9 declared - 252 in front.

England's run without a win - dating back to the draw at The Oval in the final Ashes Test in August 2013 - is their longest since 1992-93, while India have now gone 15 away Tests without victory.

England captain Alastair Cook claimed his first Test wicket of Ishant Sharma in his 105th match

In a match that featured two century partnerships for the final wicket for the first time, India held the upper hand when they reduced England to 202-7 on day three in reply to 457.

James Anderson scored 81 runs - the highest score by an England number 11 - and with Joe Root 154* put on 198 to set a new record for a 10th-wicket Test partnership

Anderson made the highest Test score by an England number 11
Anderson's innings of 230 minutes was the longest by a Test number 11
No player has waited as long as Anderson for his maiden Test fifty - 131 innings
Never before have two number 11s scored half-centuries in the same Test
This is the first Test in which there have been two century stands for the last wicket

  1. I love the test series between these two amazing teams due to their game spirit along-with the controversial fight which doesn't ever let boredom high on me.
