Chennai building collapse Saturday June 28,2014

According to Fire and Rescue service personnel, one of the multi-storey structures collapsed on an adjoining small building.

10 people have lost their lives while 26 others have been rescued as an under-construction building collapsed on the outskirts of Chennai on Saturday June 28,2014

People watch rescue work in the debris of under construction building which collapsed at Moulivakkam near Porur in Chennai on Saturday.

Five people are said to be in a critical condition.

Nearly 40 people are feared trapped in the 11-storeyed building.

Most of the victims are construction workers.

The building collapsed following heavy rains in the city. Rescue operations are underway with 10 teams of the NDRF and 180 experts working at the spot. 12 fire tenders and ambulances are also at the spot.

"10 NDRF teams are working together with other departments of state government. More than 300 personnel working. Our Main challenge is removing debris. The work could take at least 2 or 3 days. We are hopeful that there will be other survivors, " DIG NDRF SP Selvan said.
The building was being constructed by a Madurai-based builder. The police have detained 4 people for negligence in the case
Expressing grief over the incident, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said, "Police have been ordered to take action against those who are responsible for the incident."

The TN Government has also announced a compensation of Rs. two lakh for families of those who died and Rs. 50,000 for the injured.

So far, 39 people have been rescued, and police have arrested six construction company officials for alleged criminal negligence and violation of building codes.

The building crashed down Saturday night while in the final stages of construction outside Chennai, the south-coast capital of Tamil Nadu state. 

Nearly 90 contract workers were believed to have been in the basement collecting wages. 
It was the second deadly building collapse in India
Last year, India saw its worst building disaster for decades when an eight-story complex in Mumbai collapsed, killing 74 people.


One-man panel to probe Chennai building collapse Thursday July 03,2014



Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Thursday July 03,2014 ordered constitution of an one-man commission headed by Justice (retd.) R. Reghupathy to probe the circumstances that led to the building collapse at Moulivakkam, a Chennai suburb.

“55 persons have died in this unfortunate incident,” TN CM J Jayalalithaa said in a statement in Chennai.
She said the Justice Reghupathy Commission will probe the circumstances leading to the collapse of the under-construction 11-storey building.
“The commission will find out whose ignorant attitude resulted in such a mishap that left many workers dead and others injured and decide on (fixing) those responsible for it,” TN CM J Jayalalithaa said.


The commission will also suggest measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents, the Chief Minister said.
She said her government would take further action based on the commission’s report.


TN CM J Jayalalithaa said 27 persons have been pulled out alive from under the debris of the collapsed structure and have been receiving high quality medical treatment.


 “Police is taking legal action against those responsible for the incident,” she said.
