2014 Libyan Parliament(House of Representatives)Election Wednesday June 25,2014

Elections for a House of Representatives in Libya will be held on 25 June 2014

Libyans are going to the polls in the hope of ending the anarchy that has gripped the country since the 2011 overthrow of the Gaddafi regime.

A new 200-seat parliament will be elected in the second poll since the former regime's overthrow.

More than 1.5 million voters have registered for the election, compared with 2.8 million who registered for Libya's first election in 2012

Nearly 2,000 candidates are vying for seats in the new parliament, which will be called the House of Representatives

The new parliament will replace the General National Congress, a body that became riddled with controversy, political deadlock and the ideological battles that have raged since the historic election in 2012

A General National Congress was elected in July 2012, with the original responsibility of forming a constituent assembly to write the constitution; however, the National Transitional Council decided that Libyans will instead directly elect the constituent assembly.

The General National Congress came to agreement on April 10,2013 that constituent assembly members will be elected; the election for most of the constituent assembly took place on 20 February 2014.

The new legislature will allocate 30 seats for women, will have 200 seats overall (with individuals able to run as members of political parties) and allows Libyans of foreign nationalities to run for office.

Voting has ended in a Libyan general election marred by low turnout and deadly violence.
The election is seen as a last chance to end the anarchy that has gripped the country since the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi.
Officials said about 630,000 people voted, fewer than half of those eligible.
