Justice G Rohini becomes Delhi HC's first woman Chief Justice Monday April 21,2014

The Delhi High Court on Monday April 21,2014 got its first woman Chief Justice. Justice G Rohini took her oath as the first woman Chief Justice of the court, almost 47 years after it was established. An alumni of Osmania University in Hyderabad, Justice Rohini was the senior-most judge of the Andhra Pradesh High court.
She is expected to serve for a period of four years.

As Justice Rohini took the oath to office and allegiance, Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung said that Justice Rohini's appointment symbolised women empowerment.

"We need many more role models like her who can inspire young girls across the country to aspire for top positions in all walks of life," Jung said.

Born in 1955, Justice Rohini studied at Osmania University in Hyderabad and then at the College of Law, Andhra University in Visakhapatnam.

She enrolled as an advocate in December 1980, and appointed a government pleader in the high court in 1995. She was then appointed additional judge in 2001 and made a permanent judge in 2002.

While a judge in the Andhra Pradesh High Court, Justice Rohini presided over a range of cases including company and criminal matters. She was also part of a two-judge bench that dismissed a writ petition filed by Y.S. Vijayamma, wife of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy in 2012, to order an inquiry into the assets of Rajasekhara Reddy and Telugu Desam Party chief Chandrababu Naidu.

Justice Rohini's elevation as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court has been welcomed by other judges, lawyers and the High Court Bar association.

"We are very happy. The bar stands for equal opportunity to practice and demands transparency in the judicial system and we believe her presence in the HC will help us. There is a need for greater representation of women in the higher judiciary," High Court Bar Association President Rajiv Khosla said.
