The BJP stepped up its offensive against the Congress on Friday April 04,2014 by releasing a 'charge sheet' against the UPA government that listed a string of alleged scams and accused party president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi of being responsible for all the ills of India.

The document, 'A dark decade in governance', accused the UPA government of being the most corrupt since Independence, listing 9 allegations during the term of the Congress-led regime.
Ravi Shankar Prasad flanked by Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Nirmala Sitharaman releases election campaign material which the BJP calls a "chargesheet" against the UPA government in New Delhi on Friday

The 9 charges levelled by the BJP

  • Charge 1: Compromising the dignity and integrity of the office of PM.
  • Charge 2: Destruction of the Indian economy.
  • Charge 3: Endless saga of scams and corruption.
  • Charge 4: Serious challenge to national security.
  • Charge 5: Failure of foreign policy.
  • Charge 6: Neglect of development of the Northeast.
  • Charge 7: Failure in education and healthcare.
  • Charge 8: Undermining institutions - CAG, appointment of CVC.
  • Charge 9: Failure to fulfill 2009 manifesto.

Releasing the document on Friday April 04,2014, BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad slammed Sonia and Rahul saying the two cannot escape accountability for the string of alleged financial scandals during the two terms (2004-09 and 2009-14)of the coalition led by their party.

The BJP picked holes in the government's economic, defence, foreign and national security policies and neglect of the North-East, besides undermining of institutions, compromising the dignity and integrity of the office of the Prime Minister

"Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are equally responsible for all the ills of India along with Manmohan Singh, because they wanted to exercise authority without accountability… this will be remembered as the most corrupt government of India," Prasad said.

The first charge levelled by the BJP on the Congress is of devaluing the Prime Minister's Office.
"The UPA has compromised the dignity of the PM's office. Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have devalued the PM's post as the PM acted more as a CEO of a company," he said.

The second charge was 'destruction of the Indian economy across all sectors'.
It said the Govt has destroyed every engine of the Indian economy, where inflation is uncontrolled, growth rate is declining and unemployment is rising.

The third charge is of presiding over the 'endless saga of scams'. The document said there were many scams but the major ones under the UPA rule amounted to more than Rs 10,000 crore.
It mentioned the 2G spectrum, CWG, coal and Air India purchase scams among the 21 financial scandals.

"The UPA was not willing to seriously investigate any scam if there was no pressure from us and the media," Prasad said.
"The soft faces of Maoist-Leftists extremist violence are having a pride of place in Sonia Gandhi's National Advisory Council," Prasad said, attacking the UPA chairperson.

The 58-page documents highlights the failures of the Congress on various fronts.
