Kumar Sangakkara, now retiring from international Twenty20s, guided Sri Lanka past India’s below-par 130 for four with an unbeaten 52 and was then carried around the ground by his team-mates.

There was an English dimension to the triumph as Sri Lanka were marshalled by former Kent and Yorkshire coach Paul Farbrace, who earlier expressed an interest in becoming a part of England’s new coaching regime.

The victory which followed defeats in two World Twenty20 finals in 2009 and 2012, belonged to Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, two giants of the world game who are now standing down from its shortest form
