Pope Francis marks first year in office March 13,2013 -March 13,2014


A year ago, on March 13,2013, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the archbishop of Buenos Aires(Pope Francis) became the 266th head of the Roman Catholic church. His predecessor, Benedict XVI, had resigned the month before, citing a decline in his physical and mental strength, leading to an almost unprecedented handover of power

Pope Francis is the first Latin American - and the first Jesuit - to lead the Roman Catholic Church.

Since taking office, pilgrims have been arriving in Rome in unprecedented numbers.

Pope Francis is also riding high on social media, with 11 million following him in nine languages on Twitter
