On Saturday March 15,2014, the BJP announced that Narendra Modi would contest from the Varanasi seat while Murali Manohar Joshi has been shifted to Kanpur against Congress's Sriprakash Jaiswal

BJP president Rajnath Singh had told Mail Today: "Modi's popularity and his influence in galvanising the cadres and party workers cannot be questioned. His presence in Uttar Pradesh will be decisive and this is also the feeling among party workers in the state."

Varanasi is at the centre of BJP's Uttar Pradesh and Bihar policyand that is the reason the RSS has been backing Modi for the seat.

This seat has been strategically planned to have its impact on at least 74 parliamentary seats with Varanasi as the epicentre.

The 74 Lok Sabha seats are scattered over eastern Uttar Pradesh (20), Bihar (40) and Jharkhand (14), and the BJP's poll prospects will be influenced immensely with Modi fighting from the historic Hindutva stronghold
