Presidential elections were held in Slovakia on March 15,2014, with a second round to be held on March 29,2014.
Incumbent President Ivan Gasparovic is serving his second and final term as the Slovak Constitution allows a maximum of two consecutive terms in office
Presidential Candidates
The Ruling Smer Party selected Prime Minister Robert Fico as its official candidate
The People’s Platform (an alliance of three right-wing parties) failed to agree on a common candidate as of August 2013.
Christian Democratic Movement and Most-Hid announced that they supported Pavol Hrušovský, but the third party,Slovak Democratic and Chrisitan Union-Democratic Party (SDKÚ-DS) refused to agree. SDKÚ would prefer former Prime Minister Iveta Radicova as their candidate, however, she made clear that she did not want to run again for president.
The Freedom and Solidarity Party announced that Peter Osuský would be their candidate for the presidency.
Results of the Presidential Election held on March 15,2014
- Robert Fico(Smer Party)got 531919 Votes securing 28% of Votes
- Andrej Kiska(Independent)got 455996 Votes securing 24% of Votes
- Radoslav Prochazka(Independent)got 403548 Votes securing 21.2% of Votes
As no candidate gained 50% of the votes, a second round run-off will be held
Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico and
independent challenger Andrej Kiska
will go forward to the second round of the country's presidential elections scheduled for March 29,2014
