2014 Lok Sabha Election - Kerala To Have Single Phase Polling on April 10,2014



 The Election Commission of India(ECI)have announced on Wednesday March 05,2014 a 9-phase polling for the 16th Lok Sabha Election scheduled to be held between April 07 -May 12,2014

CPI Announce 4 Candidates Wednesday March 12,2014
The Communist Party of India (CPI) has announced its list of candidates in Kerala for the Lok Sabha elections. 

The party has decided to field Bennet P. Abraham in Thiruvananthapuram, Chengara Surendran in Mavelikara, C.N. Jayadevan in Thrissur, and Sathyan Mokeri in Wayanad.

 LDF Allocate Kottayam To JD(S)
The Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) has decided to allot the Kottayam Lok Sabha seat to the Janata Dal (Secular)
The JD(S) leadership originally sought Thiruvananthapuram to field A. Neelalohithadasan Nadar and then looked at the possibility of getting Kozhikode, Vadakara or Kannur.
When the CPI(M) expressed its inability to spare any of these seats, the party’s choices narrowed down to Kottayam or Idukki

CPI-M Announces 15 candidates Thursday March 13,2014

The Communist Party of India-Marxist has announced its list of 15 candidates from Kerala. The state has 20 Lok Sabha seats.
CPI-M which has a strong political base and popular leaders in Kerala has sprung a surprise by shortlisting some independents as its candidates for the general elections.

15 candidates list 

  • Kasargode- P Karunakaran, sitting MP
  • Kannur- PK Sreemathi
  • Vadakara- AN Shamsee, joint secretary of DYFI and entered politics through SFI.
  • Kozhikode- A Vijayaraghavan, former MP- both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha
  • Malappuram- PK Sainaba
  • Palakkad- MB Rajesh- sitting MP
  • Alathur- PK Biju, sitting MP
  • Alappuzha- CB Chandrababu
  • Kollam- MA Baby- MLA and CPIM Politburo member
  • Attingal- A Sampath, sitting MP
  • Ponnani- V Abdul Rahman
  • Chalakuddy - Film actor, Innocent
  • Ernakulam - Christy Fernandez, former IAS officer
  • Pathanamthitta- Peelipose Thomas, former senior Congress leader, was Pathanamthitta DCC president for almost 15 years.
  • Idukki- Joyce George - He was the legal advisor of the high range protection council formed to fight the Kasturirangan report. 


Kerala will witness a one-day polling on April 10,2014 to all its 20 seats where ruling Congress-led UDF and opposition CPI(M)-led LDF are locked in a fierce combat.
Among the key candidates in fray are six Union Ministers -- Shashi Tharoor, Kodikunnil Suresh, K.C. Venugopal, K.V. Thomas, Mullapally Ramachandran, P C Chacko (all Congress) and E Ahamed (IUML) and former Union Minister M.P. Veerendrakumar.

  Phase 3 Polling Thursday April 10,2014



About 74 % of 2.43 crore voters exercised their franchise on Thursday April 10,2014 in Phase 3 of 2014 Lok Sabha Election to elect 20 Lok Sabha members from Kerala, where the principal fight is between the ruling Congress-led UDF and the CPI (M)-led LDF. 


According to figures put out by the Election Commission shortly before the polling ended, 73.2 % voters turned up at 21,424 polling stations across the state. 

Kerala goes to polling for all its 20 seats where ruling Congress-led UDF and opposition CPI(M)-led LDF are locked in a fierce combat.

In 2009,UDF sent 16 MPs, 13 of them from Congress, 2 from IUML and 1 from the Kerala Congress (M)

In 2014 Congress has fielded 15 candidates, leaving 2 seats to IUML and 1 each to Kerala Congress (M), SJD and RSP, which joined UDF just a month back, snapping its long partnership with the LDF. 

In LDF, the CPI(M) fielded 10 party candidates and extended support to five independents, alloting four seats to CPI and one to JD(S).


 Pre-poll surveys are predicting a repeat of 2009, in which the Congress-led UDF won 16 of the 20 seats in the state. Union minister Shashi Tharoor is seeking a second term from the state capital Thiruvananthapuram. Union food minister Prof. KV Thomas of the Congress is facing former secretary to the President of India Christy Fernandes (Left backed Independent) and an international journalist Anita Pratap of the AAP in the Christian dominated Ernakulam LS seat.
Muslim League veteran A Ahamad is trying his luck from Mallappuram. Union minister KC Venugopal of Congress is seeking a re-election from Alapuzha, Union minister of state for Home Mullappalli Ramachandran of the Congress from Kozhikode and Union minister Kodikunnil Suresh of the Congress from Mavelikara are also seeking a re-election.

Result

The ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) may have won 12 seats to Opposition Left Democratic Front’s eight, but the two alliances are apart only by 1.85 per cent of the total votes polled.
