Maha Shivratri Thursday Feb 27,2014

Maha Shivratri is a Hindu festival celebrated every year in reverence of Lord Shiva.

The Mahashivratri festival, also much popular as 'Shivratri' or 'Great Night of Lord Shiva', is observed on the 13th night/14th day in the Krishna Paksha every year on the month of Maagh according to the Hindu calendar

According to Hindu mythology, Mahashivratri is Lord Shiva's favourite day. Devotees on this day remain on fast or perform hour long spiritual meditation by following rituals to commemorate Mahashivratri and be blessed with grace.


Thousands of pilgrims from Nepal, India and South Asian countries on Thursday thronged the historic Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu,Nepal  to offer prayers on Maha Shivratri



Situated on the banks of river Bagmati, the temple sparkled with colourful flags, lights and flowers.
About 3,000 security personnel, hundreds in plainclothes, and over 5,000 volunteers were deployed as part of tight security arrangements at the temple complex.
It is expected that 700,000 people, including 150,000 devotees from India, will visit the temple during the festival dedicated to Lord Shiva
