Google Doodles Sarojini Naidu's 135th Birth Anniversary(February 13, 1879 -February 13,2014)

 

To commemorate the 135th birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu Google has posted a doodle on its India home page. 

The Doodle includes a portrait of the renowned freedom fighter and also a pen as a salute to the distinguished poet. 

 

About Sarojini Naidu (Feb 13,1879 -March 2, 1949)

 

Born as Sarojini Chattopadhyaya on February 13, 1879 in Hyderabad she received her higher education from King's College London and later at Girton College, Cambridge.

Known as the Nightingale of India, she eulogised India in her poems published in 3 collections -

The Golden Threshold (1905)

 














 

 The Bird of Time(1912)


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Broken Wing(1917)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Pained by the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919 she stopped writing poetry. 

 

Sarijini Naidu's collection of poems entitled "The Feather of The Dawn" was edited and published posthumously in 1961 by her daughter Padamaja


Sarojini Naidu was the 1st Indian Woman to become the President of the Indian National Congress(INC) and the 1st Woman to become Governor of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh from 1940-49

She married Dr.Govindarajulu Naidu, a doctor by profession, when she was 19 and the couple had 5 children -

  • Jayasurya
  • Padmaja
  • Randheer
  • Nilawar and 
  • Leelamani

Sarojini Naidu died of a heart attack on March 2, 1949
