2014 New Zealand Vs India Second Test Wellington Feb 14-18,2014

 India is touring New Zealand to play 5-ODI's and 2 Test Matches

The tour of New Zealand will start with the first ODI in Napier, followed by matches in Hamilton (January 22 and January 28), Auckland (January 25) and Wellington (January 31).

Indians will play a two-day warm-up match in Whangharei from February 2, followed by the two-match Test series in Auckland (February 6 to 10) and Wellington (February 14 to 18)

All-rounder Yuvraj Singh was on Tuesday axed from India’s ODI squad owing to his poor performance in South Africa and was replaced by Stuart Binny — son of former India all-rounder Roger Binny.

Another surprise inclusion in the team was Madhya Pradesh seamer Ishwar Pandey, who has been drafted into both the ODI and Test squad

Varun Aaron(24)has made a comeback to the ODI squad replacing Mohit Sharma, who failed to impress in South Africa

The Test team was not altered too much with Ishwar’s inclusion instead of Pragyan Ojha being the only change made to the 17-member squad for the two-match series against the Kiwis starting February 10 in Auckland after a two-day practice match.

 Highlights

New Zealand's 680 for 8 declared in the 2nd innings provides the highest ever total posted by a team in the third innings of a Test match in the annals of Test cricket. 
The previous best was 671 for 4 by New Zealand against Sri Lanka at Wellington in Jan 1991 

New Zealand's innings contained three hundreds - McCullum (302), BJ Watling (124) and JDS Neesham (137*) - to provide the first occasion in the annals of Test cricket of batsman scoring a triple hundred in the third innings of a Test when three batsmen scored hundreds

 


Brendon McCullum became the first captain in the annals of Test cricket to score a triple hundred and a double hundred in consecutive Tests -scored 224 at Auckland and 302 at Wellington in this series.  

Brendon McCullum aggregated 535 runs in this series which is the record for most runs scored by a captain in a two Test series. The previous record was 510 runs scored by Mahela Jayawardene of Sri Lanka against South Africa in 2005 series.


Brendon McCullum & Jayawardene are the only two captains to aggregate 500 plus runs in a 2- Test series 

Brendon McCullum aggregated 535 runs in this series to become the sixth batsman in the annals of Test cricket to aggregate 500 plus runs in a two Test series,others being -
  • Sanath Jayasuriya (571 vs India - 1997)
  • Wally Hammond (563 vs New Zealand - 1932-33)
  • Andy Flower (540 vs India - 2000-01)
  • Mahela Jayawardene (510 vs South Africa - 2006) and
  • Matthew Hayden (501 vs Zimbabwe 2003-04).

Brendon McCullum with his 302 became the second batsman to score a triple hundred in the third innings of a Test match after Hanif Mohammad(Pakistan)who had scored 337 in the third innings of the Bridgetown Test against West Indies in January 1958.

New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum and B J Watling on Monday Feb 17,2014 broke the world record for the highest sixth-wicket partnership with a 352-run stand against India in the second cricket Test in Wellington on Monday Feb 17,2014

Brendon McCullum and BJ Watling scored 229 (not out) and 124 runs respectively to break the previous record of 351 which was put together by Mahela Jayawardene and Prasanna Jayawardene in 2009 against India.

In the course of the partnership,Brendon McCullum became only the sixth player in history and the first from New Zealand to score two double centuries in back-to-back Test matches.

This was also Brendon McCullum’s third double hundred — all these big knocks have come against India

  • 225 Vs India at Hyderabad in 2010
  • 224 Vs India at Auckland in 2014
  • 281* Vs India at Wellington in 2014

Brendon McCullum now has the distinction of have batted for the longest time by any Kiwi batsman in a Test innings - 775 minutes at crease facing 559 Balls and hitting 4x32 and 6x4

Brendon McCullum and James Neesham scored 179 Runs for the 7th Wicket

Brendon McCullum completes 5000+Runs in Test Cricket and now has scored -
84 Matches -145 Innings -5219 Runs-302 Runs Top Score-100's-9 and 50's-28 at an average of 38.09

Brendon McCullum's score of 302 Runs was also the third-highest innings by a number five batsman in Test cricket after Michael Clarke’s 329 not out against India in 2012 and Sir Don Bradman’s 304 against England in 1934

James Neesham remain unbeaten on 137, the highest individual score by a batsman on debut batting lower than number seven, beating Azhar Mahmood’s 128 not out against South Africa in 1997. It was also the highest runs scored by a New Zealand batsman on debut, beating Scott Styris’ 107 against West Indies in 2002.
