Pervez Musharraf stays away from treason trial, indictment delayed Tuesday Dec 24,2013

A special court in Pakistan on Tuesday Dec 24,2013 postponed its indictment of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf for treason until next week, after he failed to show due to security concerns

Pervez Musharaff was due to appear before a three-member tribunal but refused to attend out of security concerns, his lawyer Ahmed Raza Kasuri told reporters, after police discovered weapons along his planned route.

Five kilograms of explosives, a detonator and two pistols were found by the roadside close to Pervez Musharraf's villa on the edge of the capital Islamabad, where he lives under heavy guard.

Islamist militants, formerly targeted by Pervez Musharraf's administration, have threatened the former general.

The tribunal was due to indict the former leader when it opened Tuesday. In his absence, it rescheduled the indictment for January 1,2014 and ordered the government step up security for the next hearing.

It is the first time in Pakistan that a dictator has faced a charge of treason, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of death

Note

Pervez Musharraf has been charged over suspending the constitution and imposing a state of emergency in 2007

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, whose previous government was overthrown by Pervez Musharraf in a bloodless coup in 1999, has brought the charges.

Pervez Musharraf, who ruled between 1999 and 2008, said the charges were politically motivated.
