United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO)


The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO)is a specialised agency of the United Nations(UN)with the purpose to contribute to peace and security by promoting international collaboration through Education, Science, and Culture in order to further Universal Respect for Justice, the Rule of Law, and Human Rights along with Fundamental Freedom proclaimed in the UN Charter

UNESCO pursue its objectives through 5 major programs -
  • Education
  • Natural Science
  • Social and Human Sciences
  • Culture and
  • Information & Communication 

UNESCO's aim is -
  • to contribute to the building of peace
  • the eradication of poverty
  • sustainable development and
  •  intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information

UNESCO has offices in many locations across the globe; its headquarters are located at Place de Fontenoy  in Paris, France, now called the World Heritage Centre



UNESCO has 195 member States and 9 Associate Members.In 2011, Palestine became a UNESCO member following a vote in which 107 member states supported and 14 opposed

The first General Conference took place from November 19 to December 10,1946, and elected Dr.Julian Huxley to the post of Director-General



The Constitution was amended in November 1954 when the General Conference resolved that members of the Executive Board would be representatives of the governments of the States of which they are nationals and would not, as before, act in their personal capacity

Irina Georgieva Bokova ,a Bulgarian Politician is the current DG of UNESCO in office from Oct 15,2009
