A rare hybrid solar eclipse has swept across parts of the United States, Europe and Africa, creating spectacular scenes.

A solar eclipse happens when the moon blocks our view of the sun.

This particular eclipse is a hybrid because it is both a total and an annular eclipse, which occurs every 159 years and won't be seen again till 2172
