Bharat Ratna for Sachin Tendulkar, C.N.R. Rao Saturday Nov 16,2013

The announcement was made by Rashtrapati Bhavan within hours after Sachin Tendulkar played his 200th Test. An official statement said Sachin Tendulkar has been a true Ambassador of India in the world of sports and his achievements in cricket are unparallelled, the records set by him unmatched, and the spirit of sportsmanship displayed by him exemplary.
"That he has been honoured with several awards is testimony to his extraordinary brilliance as a sportsman," it said

Scientist, Prof Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao is a well recognized international authority on solid state and materials chemistry who has published over 1,400 research papers and 45 books.

Scientist, Prof Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao is the third scientist after

• C V Raman(awarded in 1954) and 
• former President A P J Abdul Kalam (awarded in 1997)

to be given the Bharat Ratna

 Scientist, Prof Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao's contributions have been recognized by most major scientific academies around the world through conferment of memberships and fellowships and has been honoured with several national and international awards, the official announcement said

Scientist, Prof Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao currently serves as the Head of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India

Both Sachin Tendulkar(40) and Prof. Rao(79) are also recipients of the Padma Vibhushan — second highest civilian honour

Sachin Tendulkar said he was humbled to have been chosen for the highest civilian award in the country.

“On Saturday I said that, this award (Bharat Ratna) is for my mother, because of all the sacrifices she made for me. As a child, you don’t understand life… when you grow up, you realise all these things,” he said.

“It is not just for my mother, but there are millions and millions of mothers in India who sacrifice many things for their children. I would like to share my award with them,” said the 40-year-old batting maestro who retired after breaking almost all the cricket records.

“I’m humbled and honoured to be given the Bharat Ratna. The award belongs to the entire nation, I’d say.”

 The Bharat Ratna was instituted in 1954

They join the galaxy of 41 eminent personalities who have been honoured in “recognition of exceptional service or performance of the highest order in any field of human endeavour.”

The last recipient of 'Bharat Ratna' was Hindustani classical music doyen Bhimsen Joshi, in 2009.
