Turkey's Kirkpinar Oil-Wrestling Friday July 5,2013


Turkey's longest running sports event, The Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling competition which started on Friday July 5,2013 saw a total of 678 wrestlers, called “pehlivans”. The wrestlers are registered to enter the bouts in 14 different age and weight categories in this three-day tournament. The history of this tournament dates back to the Persian Mythical Era and it test various rhythmic movements, strength in manipulating heavy objects and acrobatic skills. Contestants wear specially designed leather trousers, and are stripped to the waist and drenched in olive oil from head to toe. More than two tons of oil are used every year. The one-on-one combats staged every summer closely resemble the first ones held nearly 650 years ago. Three tons of olive oil is used each year
