2013 Pakistani Presidential Election Aug 6,2013



Presidential elections are Indirect Elections scheduled to be held on August 6 2013 in Pakistan for the post of 12th President of Pakistan.


Presidential Candidates

  • For PML-N - Mamnoon Hussain and
  • Justice Retd Wajihuddin Ahmed backed by the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI)


The ECP implemented Article 41 of the constitution for the first time in Pakistan which states the process of electing a president must begin at least 2 months, and elections to be conducted a month before the end of the President’s term.

Current President Asif Ali Zardari's tenure ends on September 8, 2013. President Zardari will not contest the next presidential election according to his spokesperson Senator Farhatullah Babar

The Electoral College of Pakistan – a joint sitting of the Senate,National Assembly and Provincial Assemblies  – will elect a new President after the expiration of the term of President Asif Ali Zardari

The ruling PML-N coalition has a simple majority in the electoral college. If the membership of the coalition does not change before the Presidential election, the coalition would be able to elect a candidate of their choice.

The Pakistan Supreme Court had brought the vote forward from August 6,2013 to July 30,2013 


Note
PPP‚ ANP and BNP Awami did not participate in the election in protest against the Supreme Court's decision of advancing the polling date from Aug 6,2013 to July 30,2013
