The rapid transit system aimed at reducing the traffic congestion in Mumbai will be built in three phases over a 15-year
period, with overall completion expected in 2021.It is the country's third metro system following Kolkata and New Delhi

It has been 2,505 days or little less than seven years, since the foundation stone for the first corridor of the Mumbai metro rail was laid by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in June 2006 and Mumbai Metro project Construction work began only in February 2008.
The corridor is still not operational, with only trial runs under way
The trial run was conducted across a three-kilometer-stretch between the Versova car depot and the Azad Nagar metro station. The section is a part of the 11.40km Versova-Ghatkopar corridor which will provide a vital east-west link and drastically reduce travel time from the existing 90 minutes to barely 20 minutes.
The first phase metro corridor will be operational up to the airport in September 2013 while it will becomes fully operational by the end of December 2013

Mumbai Metro 11.07 km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar open for public from Sunday June 08,2014
On Thursday June 5,2014, the Railway Board issued the final sanction, making the corridor safe for public
