BCCI chief N Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan who has allegedly been involved in betting on the Twenty20 tournament as claimed by arrested Bollywood actor Vindoo Dara Singh, first went into a hiding in Kodaikanal and then rushed to Mumbai to honour the police summons on Friday May 244,2013. The Mumbai Police arrested Gurunath Meiyappan after three hours of questioning, saying he was being evasive. Within minutes, Vindoo too was brought face-to-face with Meiyappan
Earlier BCCI chief N Srinivasan's company India Cements, which is the majority stakeholder in IPL team Chennai Super Kings, had sought to distance Meiyappan from the team soon after it emerged that Chennai Super Kings could be kicked out of the Twenty20 tournament if he was arrested. India Cements claimed that Meiyappan was neither the owner nor the CEO or Team Principal of the team.
However, Meiyappan's Twitter handle described him as Chennai Super Kings Team Principal along with managing director AVM productions and entertainment, AVM studios and AVM constructions at 4:50 PM on May 24,2013
But within minutes, the information was edited to delete all references to the IPL team. Even Chennai Super Kings' official website removed all references to Srinivasan's son-in-law.
The NCP spokesperson DP Tripathi said, "If Srinivasan has any iota of honesty, he should tender his resignation immediately."
Sacked IPL commissioner Lalit Modi too called for Srinivasan's resignation, saying that he should be removed "unceremoniously".
The BCCI and the IPL Management, however, has maintained a deathly silence with no official coming out with any clarification on what the cricket body plans to do even as the betting scandal was right at the doorsteps of BCCI chief N Srinivasan.
Note
Mumbai crime branch police team probing the spot-fixing scandal landed at Chennai Super Kings principal Gurunath Meiyappan's posh Cenotaph Road residence in Chennai on Thursday May 23,2013 to issue summons for questioning him in connection with the scandal. The team consisting of DCP Satyanarayan Choudhary, inspector Shashank Sandbhor, Nandkumar Gopale and Milind Khetle visited the Gurunath’s residence.
However, the team was made to wait for nearly 30 minutes by the security guard at the house before they were let in. When they went in, the police team could not find Gurunath Meiyappan inside the house.
The police hence handed over the summons to a house staff. Gurunath's cellphone too remained switched off.
The team then pasted a summons at two venues asking Gurunath to remain present at the crime branch headquarters in Crawford Market on Friday between 11 am to 5 pm for interrogation.
