  • As the relationship between Nawaz Sharif and Ghulam Ishaq Khan deteriorated,Ghulam Ishaq Khan attempted to dismiss Nawaz Sharif on corruption charges which was successfully challenged by Nawaz Sharif in Pakistan's Supreme Court. However, both were pusuaded to step down by Army Chief Abdul Waheed Kakar in 1993

  • Nawaz Sharif was re-elected PM of Pakistan in Feb 1997 with two-thirds majority in parliament.Nawaz Sharif's second term also saw tussles with the judiciary and army. When Nawaz Sharif was summoned for contempt by the Supreme Court in 1997, party workers attacked the court and Chief Justice Syed Sajjad Ali Shah .Nawaz Sharif also fell out with Army Chief Jehangir Karamat  and replaced him with Pervez Musharraf  in 1998, but after Pakistan's haphazard performance in the Kargil War, relations between the two also deteriorated. When he attempted to relieve Musharraf from his command on 12 October 1999, the army instead ousted Nawaz Sharif's Govt., exiling him to Saudi Arabi

His return to Pakistan came with only one day left to register for elections. This set the stage for an overnight shift of the political scene.

  • In the 2008 Pak General Election, PPP and PML - N rely on a mix of feudal relationships and regional sentiment for their voting bases – the Bhuttos in Sindh, Nawaz Sharif in the Punjab.Zardari's Pakistan People's Party, boosted by the death of Benazir Bhutto, and Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-N dominated the elections. PPP received 86 seats for the 342-seat National Assembly; the PML-N, 66; and the PML-Q, which backs president Pervez Musharraf, 40.Zardari and Sharif formed a coalition government

  • On Aug 07,2008, the coalition government agreed to impeach Musharraf. Zardari and Sharif sent a formal request for him to step down. A charge-sheet had been drafted, and was to be presented to parliament

  • On Aug 11, the National Assembly was summoned to discuss impeachment proceedings

  • On Aug 18,2008, Musharraf resigned as President of Pakistan due to mounting political pressure from the impeachment proceedings

  • On April 02,2010,the 18th amendment Bill in the Parliament removed the bar on former prime ministers to stand for only two terms in office. This allows Sharif to become prime minister for a third time
