Privately Owned Daily Newspapers Back on Sale in Myanmar - Monday April 1,2013


Private daily newspapers are being sold in Burma for the first time in almost 50 years, as a state monopoly ends.Private dailies in Burmese, English, Indian and Chinese, which had been commonplace in the former British colony, were forced to close under military rule in 1964.

16 papers have so far been granted licences, although only 4 were ready to publish on Monday April 1,2013.The 4 Daily Newspapers are -
1)''Golden Fresh Land''
2)The ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP)'s ''The Union''
3)The well-established weekly The Voice is converting itself into the ''Voice Daily'' and
4)The Standard Time Daily
All four newspapers are in Burmese, ranging in price from 150 kyat-200 kyat (US 20 cents-25 cents)
