Vladimir Pekhtin(62) a leading pro-Kremlin MP, resigned in the State Duma after opposition leader and anti-corruption campaigner Alexei Navalny alleged he had illegally concealed the purchase of more than $2m in luxury properties in Florida including beachfront apartments.
Alexei Navalny(36) a lawyer who runs a team of corruption investigators, said Vladimir Pekhtin had failed to disclose the assets in a property declaration required of MPs under Russian law and also questioned how the legislator afforded the property on his modest salary.
Earlier,Vladimir Pekhtin said the accusation of impropriety was unfounded because the two condos in Miami Beach and a villa in Ormond Beach belonged to his son, and he owned "practically no property abroad".
Vladimir Pekhtin, a member of United Russia, the party controlled by President Vladimir Putin, promised to clear his name in a resignation speech in parliament. "I have taken the not particularly easy decision to give up my seat," he told the chamber to muted applause. "I do not want the shadow of ungrounded accusations to fall on our party."
