2013 Cypriot Presidential Election - Sunday Feb 17,2013


Presidential elections are going to be held in Cyprus on February 17, 2013 and if no candidate obtains 50% of Votes in the first round,there is a second round that might be held on February 24,2013

Current President Demetris Christofias has announced that he will not be seeking re-election

 Presidential Candidates

11 candidates were approved to participate in the elections. Each candidate had to be recommended by one Cypriot citizen and supported by eight more.All the names of the candidates were announced on Jan18,2013.The 11 candidates are fighting to capture the largest share of the island’s 545,180 registered voters, who are set to cast their ballots at one of 1,139 polling stations at home and abroad.

1)Nikos Anastasiadis (Lawyer – MP), supported by DISY and DIKO (leftist party and democrats)

2)Stavros Malas (Geneticist) – supported by AKEL (communist party)

3)Georgios Lillikas (Political Scientist) Independent-supported by EDEK (socialist party)

4)Praxoula Antoniadou-Kyriakou (Economist) – supported by EDI (Liberal party)
5)Makaria Andri-Stylianou (Assistant Director of Primary Education) – Independent
6)Lakis Ioannou (Citizen Rights Consultant) – supported by LASOK
7)Costas Kyriakou-Outopos (Farmer- Writer)
8)Andreas Efstratiou (Entrepreneur)
9)Lukas Stavrou (Painter, Writer) – supported by EDIK

Presidential Debates 

On a meeting with spokepersons of 4 large networks in Cyprus (Mega, ANT1,Sigma,RIK) it was proposed to hold 5 debates .In two debates all candidates would participate.The other three debates would be double, which that means the participants would be two.(Anastasiades-Malas, Malas-Lillikas, Anastasiades-Lillikas)
The debates were held on January 14 and 28 and February 11.

Presidential Election will go to a 2nd round on Feb 24,2013


With all the votes counted,frontrunner Nicos Anastasiades fell short of the 50% needed for an outright majority as he secured only 45.46%, well ahead of his nearest rival, Stavros Malas, who got 26.91% votes and Independent George Lillikas who got 24.93% votes



 

Nicos Anastasiades and Stavros Malas, backed by the left-wing Akel party, will now contest the run-off vote.

Nicos Anastasiades Wins Presidential Election

 

Greek Cypriots elected the veteran rightwinger Nicos Anastasiades as their 7th president on Sunday  Feb 24,2013 by polling 57.48% of votes
NicosAnastasiades, who assumes office on 1 March, had promised to form a government of "national salvation" in a bid to keep bankruptcy at bay
