Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan

 

'Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan'(SSA) -The Education for All Movement, is an Govt of India Programme aimed at the Universalization of Elementary Education  "in a time bound manner", as mandated by the 86th amendment to the Constitution of india  making free and education to children of ages 6–14 (estimated to be 205 million in number in 2001) a Fundamental Right. 

 

SSA is being implemented in partnership with State Governments to cover the entire country and address the needs of 192 million children in 1.1 million habitations. SSA covers 193 million children, 3.3 million teachers and nearly 1 million schools and alternative schools spread over 1.1 million habitations in 28 States and 7 Union Territories. The largest programme of its kind in the world.

Objectives of SSA are -

  1. All children complete eight years of elementary education by2010,
  2. Focus on elementary education of satisfactory quality with emphasis on education for life,
  3. Bridge all gender and social category gaps at primary stage by 2007 and at elementary   education stage by   2010 and,
  4. Universal retention by 2010
  5. Open new schools in areas which do not have them and to expand existing school infrastructures and maintenance.
  6. Address inadequate teacher numbers, and provide training a development for existing teachers
  7. Provide quality elementary education including life skills with a special focus on the education of girls and children with special needs as well as computer education.
