Seven states(Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan) in North India faced a long power cut late on Sunday night which affected nearly 300 million people. Due to a massive breakdown in the northern grid.There was no power in Delhi and neighbouring states since 2 am.
The 400-kV Bina-Gwalior line, feeding the Agra-Bareilly transmission section, tripped at 2.35 a.m. and wreaked havoc on the generation and transmission systems, shutting down all major plants, including hydropower stations, in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and the Union Territory of Chandigarh, all wired to the northern grid. The immediate impact was shortage of around 32,000 MW.
The BSES said such a power failure happened after 11 years. "Northern grid collapsed due to heavy demand in the last few days.
Water services were also affected across Delhi. There are seven water plants, of which five started working between 7:30 to 8:00 am, while two were yet to begin. Water supply is slow and low all across the city.
Train services were also affected by the power failure in North India.The Metro service in Delhi was also hit. However, 70 per cent of the Metro train services resumed.Nearly all passenger trains in North India have been affected. Trains like Shatabdi and Rajdhani are running late by four to five hours.

The failure of the northern grid brought to a halt more than 500 trains, including 300 passenger trains.
Most of the trains bound here on the Howrah-Delhi route screeched to a halt at Etawah in Uttar Pradesh when the power breakdown hit the Delhi, Ambala, Agra, Allahabad, Jhansi, Kota and Moradabad divisions.
Trains were stranded at Ambala, Kurukshetra, Ludhiana, Phagwara and Karnal. Services were badly affected in Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana, and diesel engines were pressed into service.
The Railways drew power from other grids in Uttar Pradesh which helped the movement of trains in the Bina-Mathura and Kota-Mathura sections.
Several trains continue to run up to eight hours behind schedule after the restoration of power. Several trains have been rescheduled.

The power situation in North India improved partially on July 30,2012Monday morning. Power was restored in parts of Punjab, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Power has been restored in Lucknow and other big cities in Uttar Pradesh.
