Vice Presidential Election

The Vice-President is elected indirectly, by an electoral college consisting of members of both houses of the Parliament. The election of the Vice-President is slightly different from the election of the President—the members of state legislatures are not part of the electoral college for Vice Presidential election

Hamid Ansari Named UPA Vice Presidential Candidate
Mohammad Hamid Ansari(DOB April 01,1937) is the 12th and current vice-president of India who the office on Aug 11,2007succeeding Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.

Hamid Ansari(75) will be the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate in the Vice Presidential elections for second term, Congress president Sonia Gandhi announced in New Delhi on Saturday July 14,2012.
Nitish Kumar,a leader in NDA Alliance has also pledged support to Hamid Ansari's candidature.

Hamid Ansari a career diplomat who has also served as Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, will emulate the late philosopher-statesman S Radhakrishnan, who got two terms as vice-president between 1952 and 1962.

It is to be noted that in 2007, Ansari was a surprise choice for Vice President when the Left parties--which were supporting the UPA-I government from outside--proposed his name and the Congress-led alliance accepted it.Hamid Ansari was Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities when he was nominated for the Vice-Presidential poll in 2007.
Hamid Ansari defeated Najma Heptuallah of BJP in the 2007 election securing 455 votes in an electoral college of 788.Rashid Masood, candidate of UNPA, was placed third.

 BJP leader Jaswant Singh Named NDA Vice Presidential Candidate

Jaswant Singh is an M.P from Darjeeling,West Bengal Parliamentary Constituency and is from Jodhpur in Rajastan.He was an Officer in the Indian Army in 1960's.
He was the Finance Minister in the short-lived government of A B Vajpayee ,which lasted for only 16 days  from May 16, 1996, to June 1, 1996.
He was Minister of External Affairs of India, serving from Dec 5, 1998 until July 1, 2002 after A B Vajpayee became the PM in 1998.
In July 2002 he became Finance Minister again, switching posts with Yashwant Sinha and served as Finance Minister until the defeat of the Vajpayee government in May 2004 and was instrumental in defining and pushing through the market-friendly reforms of the government.

BJP leader Jaswant Singh(DOB Jan 03,1938) was on Monday July 16,2012chosen by the NDA as its unanimous candidate for the Vice Presidential election against UPA nominee Hamid Ansari

 "We have decided not to give them (Congress-led UPA) a walkover... We have unanimously decided that Jaswant Singh will be the NDA candidate in the Vice Presidential poll," L K Advani, NDA Working President, announced after an NDA meeting.
Reacting to his nomination, Jaswant Singh(74) said, "It is a matter of great respect that the NDA has unanimously chosen me as their candidate for the post of Vice President. It is a big responsibility and also a challenge"
